The Village of Castleton-on-Hudson began updating their Comprehensive Plan in late 2021 with help from Delaware Engineering. Also called a master plan, it is a document that provides direction in making land use, development, and other long-range planning decisions in the Village.  With input from the community, it will help local decision-makers take a look at where the community has been, where it wants to go, and how it can get there.

Castleton adopted its first comprehensive plan in 2005, and the plan has not been updated since then.  The plan that will be developed by Delaware Engineering will contain information relating to economic development, land use, natural resources, infrastructure, housing, historic preservation and other issues of local importance.

It will include an evaluation of current issues and opportunities by subject area, along with goals and objectives, and implementation strategies designed to achieve the collective vision of the village’s future.  Once completed, it will serve as a guide for development decisions over the next ten to twenty years.

Castleton’s comprehensive plan was adopted in 2024.  Input from community residents was obtained via a walking tour, an on-line survey and an interactive community visioning workshop.

The comprehensive plan committee has been meeting monthly, with each meeting organized around a specific topic.  For each topic, the committee has been identifying issues and opportunities related to that topic, with guidance from local subject area experts.  In the coming months, the committee will begin to focus on developing a list of goals and objectives designed to address the issues identified.  The final step in the planning process will be discussing implementation — what specific actions should be undertaken by whom and in what timeframe to address each of the issues identified.
